Migration
How to migrate away from Carl-bot
What to do about a Tagscript library that has no direct equivalent elsewhere, and the one category — ticketing — Carl-bot never built at all.

Carl-bot is narrower and deeper than most bots in this category — it is best understood as the reaction-roles and Tagscript bot, with a strong logging and automod layer wrapped around it, rather than an attempt at doing everything. That shape changes how a migration goes: most of the configuration rebuilds cleanly, but one piece — its scripting language — does not have a direct equivalent to migrate to, and needs a different kind of planning than a straight data export.
Budget a weekend regardless of server size if you use Tags & Triggers seriously; an evening is enough if you only used the reaction-role and moderation side.
Before you start: you need Manage Server, and access to the Discord account with the Patreon-linked subscription — Carl-bot Premium is bought on Patreon and connected through Discord’s own account linking, so cancelling it happens on Patreon, not inside Discord.
Step 1: find out what you’re actually replacing
Carl-bot’s free tier is broad. Reaction roles (the full system), automod’s eight filter types, comprehensive logging with no premium gate, a complete Suggestions module, core starboard, and unlimited Tags & Triggers at up to 25,000 characters each are all free. Premium mostly adds Levels — which is not available on free at all — Personalization (a custom bot avatar and banner), sticky messages, timed reaction roles, and limit increases on triggers, honeypot channels and social alert channels.
So the real question is the same as with any broad free tier: were you paying for Premium, and if so, was it specifically for Levels, Personalization or sticky messages? Whichever it was narrows what actually needs rebuilding.
Step 2: inventory before Carl-bot’s config is gone
Capture these while you still have access:
| Capture | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Every tag’s content and trigger | See step 3 — this is the one that needs real planning |
| Reaction role panels and their mappings | Which reaction or button maps to which role, per message |
| Automod filters and the bad-word list (up to 50 entries) | Rules refined over time, not written once |
| Suggestion channel and status settings | Approve/deny/consider/implement workflow, if configured |
| Starboard channel, emoji and threshold | |
| Twitch and YouTube alert channels | The only two platforms Carl-bot covers |
| The leaderboard, if Levels was active | Cannot be reconstructed afterward |
Step 3: decide what your tags were actually doing
This is the step that makes Carl-bot different from most migrations in this category. Tagscript is a genuine scripting language — conditionals, variables, arithmetic, embed construction, and the ability to invoke Carl-bot’s own commands from inside a tag. Most other bots do not have an equivalent, so there is no clean export path the way there sometimes is for a leaderboard.
Sort your tags into two piles before rebuilding anything:
- Simple canned responses — a trigger that always returns the same text or embed. These rebuild directly onto almost any auto-responder or custom-command feature.
- Real logic — a tag using conditionals, variables, or calling another command. These need to be redesigned as whatever your new bot’s closest equivalent actually is, which is sometimes several separate automations rather than one tag doing everything.
Worth knowing while you are rebuilding: Carl-bot’s trigger limit — 50 free, 75 on Premium — does not error when exceeded. The excess simply stops working, alphabetically. If your trigger list ever felt like it had gaps, this is almost certainly why, and it is useful information when deciding which triggers actually mattered enough to rebuild first.
Step 4: rebuild in dependency order
- Roles first, with the new bot’s own role positioned above everything it will grant. See why your bot can’t assign a role if this is unfamiliar territory.
- Permissions and channels.
- Moderation and automod, including your bad-word list and any honeypot channels.
- Greetings (Carl-bot’s welcome-message module) and any auto-role on join.
- Reaction roles. Rebuild the panels; consider moving to buttons if reactions were your only option before.
- Tickets, if you need them for the first time. This is genuinely new territory rather than a migration — Carl-bot never had a ticket system, so if you ran one, it was a second bot the whole time. How to set up a Discord ticket system covers building one from scratch.
- Everything else — starboard, suggestions, giveaways, logging, social alerts.
Step 5: remove Carl-bot and handle the Patreon subscription correctly
Removing the bot is the normal Server Settings → Integrations path.
Cancelling billing needs a moment of care, because Carl-bot’s pricing is structured differently from
most bots in this category: a Patreon pledge buys a number of server slots — one at $7.99/month,
up to five at $24.99/month — which the subscriber assigns and unassigns themselves with
!addpremium and !removepremium, checking what’s currently active with !listpremium. If you run
more than one server on Carl-bot, unassign the one you’re leaving rather than cancelling the whole
pledge, and reassign that freed slot elsewhere or downgrade the tier separately. Only cancel the
Patreon pledge outright if you are leaving Carl-bot everywhere.
Carl-bot’s own documentation devotes a troubleshooting section to Patreon linking specifically failing, recommending waiting at least ten minutes and, failing that, editing your Patreon profile to force a resync before contacting support with a receipt. If you are moving a slot rather than cancelling entirely, budget for that possibility rather than assuming it is instant.
What Carl-bot does that your replacement may not
Concede these honestly — they are real, and specific to Carl-bot in this category.
- Tagscript, described above, is the standout. Unlimited tags on the free tier, 25,000 characters each, with real programming constructs — nothing else in this category ships an equivalent.
- The best multi-server pricing in this category. Five servers for $24.99 a month, self-assigned by the subscriber, beats five separate per-server subscriptions anywhere else by a wide margin if you operate more than one community.
- Comprehensive free logging. Roughly two dozen event types with no premium gate and no documented retention limit — a genuinely strong free feature worth crediting directly rather than treating as a gap to route around.
- A complete, free Suggestions module, with voting thresholds, decision states and anonymous mode included at no cost.
- A Server Discovery bump economy — Superbumps and Bump Multipliers, sold through Discord’s own in-app store rather than Carl-bot’s own billing, to raise a server’s ranking in Carl-bot’s discovery listing. Nothing else in this comparison offers anything like it.
What the replacement side looks like
Read from Vetox’s own tier configuration, with the tier named on every row.

Vetox’s plans are $4.99/month for Basic, $7.99 for Max and $17.99 for Black, with yearly at $44.99, $69.99 and $149.99, across 21 interface languages.
Judged purely on how much of a working server this replaces from one subscription, the honest picture is that Carl-bot was never trying to be everything — it specialised in reaction roles, Tagscript and logging, and did those three things well. A platform built to also cover ticketing, applications, backup and anti-raid in the same subscription is answering a different question, and on capability breadth against a single price it is the more complete choice — but that comparison only matters if breadth is what you actually needed. If Tagscript specifically was the reason you ran Carl-bot, read step 3 again before you commit to anything.
Common questions
Will my tags work anywhere else? Not directly — Tagscript is Carl-bot’s own scripting language. Simple canned-response tags rebuild easily on most auto-responder features; tags using real logic need to be redesigned around whatever automation tools your new bot actually offers.
Do I need to migrate levels? Only if you were paying for Carl-bot Premium specifically for Levels — it does not exist on the free tier at all, so a free-tier server has no leaderboard to lose.
What happens to my Patreon subscription if I run other Carl-bot servers?
Nothing, as long as you unassign the specific server you are leaving with !removepremium rather
than cancelling the whole pledge. The freed slot can be reassigned to a different server or the tier
adjusted separately.
I never used tickets on this server — does that section matter to me? Only if you are adding ticketing for the first time as part of this move. If you already ran a separate ticket bot alongside Carl-bot, that relationship does not change just because you are replacing Carl-bot itself — decide separately whether to consolidate onto one bot for both.
