Why your Discord notifications are not arriving

Why Discord notifications are not arriving — seven causes common to all eight platforms, starting with the toggle that ships off and is easy to miss.

Every one of the eight notification platforms — Twitch, YouTube, Kick, Reddit, Bluesky, Steam, RSS and Podcasts — shares the same short list of reasons nothing arrives, and the first one accounts for more reports than the rest combined.

Before you start: notifications require Basic premium on every platform, with no exception. The bot needs View Channel, Send Messages and Embed Links in every target channel — every announcement is an embed, so Embed Links specifically is non-negotiable.

1. Is the platform’s toggle actually on?

Each of the eight platforms has its own toggle in Server Setup, off by default, and the notifications settings page itself gives no indication of whether it is on. A fully configured subscription with the correct channel and a working embed template will announce nothing at all if this one toggle was never switched. This is, by a wide margin, the most common cause — check it before anything else.

2. Is premium active, and is it Basic or above?

The tier gate and the Server Setup toggle are two separate systems, both of which have to allow the platform through. Active premium with the toggle off produces silence, and the toggle on with lapsed premium produces silence too — you need both.

Every notification is an embed. Without Embed Links specifically — View Channel and Send Messages are not enough on their own — nothing posts, and nothing on the notifications page will tell you which permission is missing.

4. Did you add a Twitch or Kick streamer while they were already live?

Twitch and Kick track a live/offline state transition, not individual posts. Adding someone who is already streaming produces nothing, because there was no transition to catch — the first announcement you actually get is their next stream. This is expected, not a delay.

5. Did content publish while your premium was inactive?

Anything published during a lapse is marked as already seen, permanently, even though the item was never announced. Reactivating premium resumes tracking going forward; it does not retroactively announce what was missed during the gap.

6. Are you at the 10-item cap for that platform?

Ten tracked items per platform per server is a flat ceiling on every tier, Black included. If you cannot add another streamer, channel, subreddit or feed, remove one before trying again — there is no premium path past this specific number.

7. Did an RSS or podcast feed URL fail validation on add?

RSS and Podcasts fetch the feed URL you supply behind a security guard that rejects anything other than a normal, publicly reachable http:// or https:// address — a feed sitting behind authentication, on a private network address, or serving something other than a valid feed at that URL will be refused at the moment you try to add it, rather than accepted and silently failing later. If a feed will not save at all, confirm the URL loads the actual feed XML in a plain browser first, not a page that redirects to something else.

Platform-specific things worth checking

  • Twitch and Kick — clearing the channel field on an existing entry does not clear it; the field is not sent when empty, so the old channel silently stays in place. Select a different channel instead of trying to blank it out.
  • YouTube — a new upload can take three to four minutes longer than other platforms to appear, because discovery runs through a feed check and then a second call to classify live versus upload; this delay is normal.
  • Reddit and Steam — there is no content filter on either platform. If unwanted posts are appearing, that is expected behaviour for the subreddit or game you chose, not a misconfiguration.
  • Bluesky — replies and reposts are filtered out by design; quote posts are not, and will appear.
  • RSS and Podcasts — a feed’s own missing or malformed publish date can let old items bypass the usual 2-hour age guard, which is occasionally why an old item suddenly appears.

An embed field keeps disappearing

An empty title or value is dropped from the rendered embed rather than shown blank. This is almost always a variable that does not exist for that platform — Twitch’s {stream.game} typed into a Kick template, for instance, resolves to nothing and the field vanishes. Check the variable is one the specific platform actually supports before assuming the embed builder itself is broken.

Test it properly

  1. Confirm the Server Setup toggle for the specific platform, separately from the notifications settings page.
  2. Confirm active Basic premium or above.
  3. Check Embed Links in the target channel specifically, not just View Channel and Send Messages.
  4. For Twitch or Kick, wait for a genuine transition rather than judging the setup against someone already live.
  5. For everything else, wait for genuinely new content — nothing backfills on setup.

Common questions

A setting saved but does not seem to have taken effect. How long should I wait? Configuration normally reaches the bot within seconds, but the bot’s own cache can hold a stale value for up to about 10 minutes in the worst case. Wait ten minutes before re-saving or assuming the change failed.

Two servers follow the same Twitch streamer. Why did only one get the alert? Live/offline state for Twitch and Kick is tracked per streamer globally, not per server — both servers should fire on the same transition. If one did not, check Embed Links in that specific server’s channel; a delivery failure on one server is lost with no retry for that occurrence.

Why do I get the live announcement but never the offline one? Offline announcements are off by default on both Twitch and Kick. Turn Notify when offline on for the specific streamer if you want it.

Does every one of the eight platforms need the same tier, or do some need more than Basic? All eight need exactly Basic — there is no platform that requires Max or Black to function, and no platform that Vetox includes for free. Tier requirements do not vary by platform.

I removed and re-added the same source. Did that fix a stuck state? It can, because removing and re-adding clears the tracked state entirely — treat it the same as adding a source for the first time, including the fact that nothing published before the re-add will be announced.

For the shared setup every platform follows, see how to set up Discord notifications. For the two most commonly requested platforms specifically, see setting up Twitch alerts and setting up YouTube notifications.
